Prospective Participants' FAQ
Interested in becoming a participant with Michigan Psychic Fair? We'd love to have you! Please use the Contact Us link on the home page to send us an email introducing yourself and requesting an application. The information below provides answers regarding application procedures and other policies to help smooth the process for you. Please take a look to familiarize yourself with how our fairs operate. If you have any additional questions, feel free to drop us an email.
*How can I become a participant in the Michigan Psychic Fair?
We are always interested in welcoming new people to work our fairs. First, take a look at the schedule page to see which dates you may be interested in participating. Then, send us an email, using the Contact Us link, introducing yourself and what services or products you wish to offer at our events. Include those dates that you wish to work. We will send you an email including the link to go to to download a copy of our application, as well as letting you know which of the dates you requested have openings avaliable. You will then fill out the application and mail it back with the payment for your first approved dates. Please do not send the application or the payment for any dates for which you have not received prior approval from us.
*Why must I seek approval for a specific date before sending in a payment or the application for it?
We may not have a space available for you at some fairs. We aim for a small and intimate setting, which means dates can fill up quickly. Also, if you request approval for a specific date, we will hold your space for you for a limited period of time, during which you will have time to send us the application without worrying that the space will fill up. Please note, though, that if we do not receive your application and payment in a timely manner (generally a week or two), we assume that you have lost interest in the date and will fill it at our own discretion . If we agree to hold a space for you at a fair, this in no way guarantees your space, if your application fails to reach us within a reasonable amount of time.
*Do I have to agree to work all of your dates?
No, not at all. You can sign up for any event that we have an appropriate space for you, but you are not required to sign up for more than one at a time. We respect that you are a private contractor and that you may have other obligations that may keep you from wanting to participate in some of our events. So, please, only sign up for those dates that interest you and that fit into your schedule.
*What happens if I have to cancel a date for which I have already signed up?/What is your cancellation policy?
If you have to pull out of an event that you have already committed yourself to, you must do it with at least two weeks' notice. If given two weeks' notice, we will not refund your booth fee, but we will apply that payment to another one of our events for you. If you fail to give us notice, or it is less than two weeks, we will not credit your booth fee, unless we are able to replace you with an appropriate and like participant (to be determined at our discretion). No credits will be issued under any circumstances if you simply fail to show up the day of the event. We do not give monetary refunds.
*Do I become a Michigan Psychic Fair employee when I sign up for your events?
No. All participants are considered private contractors and are, therefore, responsible for all of their own taxes, fees, licensing, and insurance.
*Are there any per-reading fees that I will owe to Michigan Psychic Fair?
No. Once you have paid your booth fee, all money that you collect for your products and services at any Michigan Psychic Fair event are yours to keep.
*How do I know what to charge?/Is there a set fee for readings or bodywork sessions?
No. As a private contractor, you have the right to set your own fees. We respect that you know what your time and services are worth and are in the best position to determine the cost of your sessions.
*What do other readers charge for their sessions?
It varies by reader. However, in general, it seems that the majority of our readers set their fees in the vicinity of $40 per half hour session. We also encourage readers to consider offering a mini-session for a reduced fee (e.g., $20 for a fifteen minute session), as we do get customers who either cannot afford a full session or are interested in getting readings from several different readers and don't want to pay for a long session with each. That said, however, we do have many readers who do not feel that they can give a decent reading in the shortened time period, or that it isn't worth their energies to do mini-sessions, or don't feel it is appropriate for them for whatever reason, and, therefore do not offer mini-session. Again, this is fine with us. You know what works best for you and your clients.
*How many other participants will there be at any given event?
We are aiming for an atmosphere of intimacy at our events. Therefore, they are limited in size. We generally try to adapt the number of participants we sign up for any event to the number of customers we expect at that location. Therefore, the number of participants varies quite a bit from location to location. In general, though, we intend to have roughly a handful of participants.
*What is attendance like at your events?
Attendance varies from week to week and from location to location. In general, though, we expect between 25 and 55 customers at an event. This is not a huge number, when compared to some of the larger festivals, but we are not aiming for a large festival-like atmosphere. Instead, we aim for small and intimate, when you can spend the time to truly understand the needs of your clients and take the time to fully meet them. We do not want our customers to feel as though they are being "processed through," as happens at some of the larger events. We view our fairs as an opportunity to build lasting relationships with clients through quality of service. Also, unlike at most large events, every customer who pays the door fee at our fairs has come to get a reading. That said, we understand that this environment is not suitable for everyone. If you demand a higher number of customers to feel it worth your while, our events are not likely to be appropriate for you. We want participants who are happy with the environment we offer and not spend their time with us wishing it were something other than what it is.
*Who may participate in your fairs?
In general, any type of reader is welcomed to participate. We are friendly to all paths and ask that you, too, be respectful to all spiritual journeys while working with us.
We welcome any reader, vendor, or bodyworker who offers services within, or related to, the metaphysical or holistic fields. Michigan Psychic Fair reserves the right to exclude any participant whom we judge to be inappropriate to detrimental to our events, as well as the interests of our clients and other participants.
Also, because our fairs are small and space is limited, we will not allow multiple vendors whose product lines are overly similar to sign up for the same dates. With the small size of our events, it would not be fair to ask two vendors offering the same items to compete with each other at the same date. It is for this reason that we ask vendors to let us know what they will be offering to sell before giving them approval to sign up for a specific date. Michigan Psychic Fair reserves the right to determine and make any decision regarding product line overlap.
*How big is my space?
We do not map out spaces by footage, with the small size of our events. That allows us a certain amount of flexibility in setting up the room, to allow for the different need of our participants. As a general guideline, though, readers will have enough room to set up a table (which they must provide for themselves) of roughly three feet by three feet (an average "card" table). Vendors and reader/vendors will have their table provided for them. These are generally six-foot or eight-foot rectangular tables (at some of the halls we rent, you will instead be provided with a six foot round table, depending on what the facility provides for us). At some venues, there will be additional space for you to set up additional displays or, in the case of the reader/vendor your own card table from which to read. This additional space, however, is based solely on the size of the venue and the number or participants and the granting of it is strictly up to the discretion of the Michigan Psychic Fair and is in no way guaranteed. Space for bodyworkers is roughly equivalent to the area of the banquet table (no table is provided, however, unless the bodyworker requests one ahead of time).
*How will I get the notice of potential customers are your events?
At every event, we provide a literature table near the entrance of the room where the fair is held. When coming to the registration table, clients are directed to check out the literature table to see who is working at the fair that day. We encourage you to put fliers, business cards, or other promotional material to promote yourself and your services. We do have some customers who are brave enough souls (or trust in their own intuition enough) to skip the literature table and make their decision once they enter the fair room, but we have discovered, over the years, that this is where most of our customers begin to decide who they would like to go to that day and that you are likely to miss the lion's share of the day's clients if you fail to take advantage of this important first contact site.
You may use whatever promotional materials you deem appropriate. However, space on the literature table is limited and must be shared by all the day's participants. It is up to us, the proprietors of Michigan Psychic Fair, to alter the table, either by removing excessive or inappropriate materials or by rearranging the materials as we see fit.
Further, you may use the literature table to promote your business beyond the scope of the fair (home parties, other appearances, classes, etc.). We will not, however, allow you to promote an event that is occurring during one of our own events (to allow you to do so would be counterproductive to the fair and potentially harmful to our other participants). We will remove, or request you to remove, any literature we deem in violation of this rule as we see fit.
*May I have a sign at my table?
As a general rule, yes. We want you to promote yourself in whatever way you think will be to your best advantage. We do request that signs be professional in appearance and appropriate in their language and look. Large signs and signs that block the flow of traffic, diminish the line of site of other participants, or are in any other way deemed inappropriate will not be allowed.
*May I use other decorations?
Yes. Table decoration is an important way to set yourself apart from other participants. We suggest setting up your table in a way that attracts the sort of customer you want to have. Not all customers want the same sort of reader. How you chose to set up your table is an important way to tell potential clients about you, your personality, your skills, etc. We, again, require the same professional and appropriate appearance for your table decorations as we do for signs. Please be sure to keep your decorations within the confines or your allotted booth space.
*May I burn candles or incense or play music at my table?
We do not allow incense to be burned at any of our events. At most events, you may burn a candle at your booth, as long as the flame is contained within a vessel (such as a votive holder). No open flames are allowed. There are some venues that prohibit the burning of any candles whatsoever and the rules of the venue will supercede all those set forth by Michigan Psychic Fair in this matter. Also, many of our clients and participants have allergies and/or asthma. Any candle (or any element of your table display) that is irritating, overwhelming, or deemed inappropriate will be prohibited. You may place soft music, as long as it is appropriate to the fair and does not disturb or interrupt any other participant or customer.
